1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Claudia
6 Ferrell is retiring at the end of the 2001 school year after
7 30 years of teaching history and language arts at North Ridge
8 Middle School; and
9 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell received her bachelor's degree
10 in history from the University of North Carolina at
11 Greensboro in 1964, and her master's degree in history from
12 Kansas State University in 1972; and
13 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell began her teaching career at
14 North Ridge Middle School in 1972; and
15 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell has enjoyed the challenge of
16 teaching history to students entering their teenage years;
17 she would often attempt to make history relevant by asking
18 her students questions not in the history book and rewarding
19 them with Snickers bars; and
20 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell's friends and colleagues have
21 said that one can learn a great deal about American history
22 just by standing next to the door, listening to her teach;
23 and
24 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell has witnessed many changes in
25 education throughout the years, including the advancement in
26 testing procedures; and
27 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell is retiring this year because
28 she wants to leave the teaching profession while she still
29 has her health and because of the overwhelming amount of
30 paperwork under which teachers are often buried; and

1 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell plans to spend her free time
2 with her husband, Dale, a retired teacher who taught for 20
3 years at Danville High School, and with her daughter; in
4 addition she plans to pursue her hobby of gardening with the
5 eventual goal of becoming a master gardener in the
6 University of Illinois Extension, Vermilion County Unit
7 Master Gardener Program; and
8 WHEREAS, Claudia Ferrell's presence and vision will be
9 deeply missed by the faculty, staff, and students, past and
10 present, at North Ridge Middle School; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13 we congratulate Claudia Ferrell on her retirement after 30
14 years of service to the students, faculty, and staff at North
15 Ridge Middle School and we wish her well in all of her future
16 endeavors; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to Claudia Ferrell as an expression of our esteem.
