 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members  of  this  Body  are  honored   to
 3    recognize  significant  milestones in the lives of the people
 4    of this State; and

 5        WHEREAS, It has come to our  attention  that  Mary  Jaros
 6    Astroth   of   Alton,   Illinois  is  celebrating  the  100th
 7    anniversary of her birth; and

 8        WHEREAS, Mary Jaros Astroth was  born  on  September  10,
 9    1901,  in Olesna, Czechoslovakia to John and Catherine Jaros;
10    and

11        WHEREAS, Mary Jaros Astroth crossed the Atlantic Ocean by
12    boat with her mother, a brother, and a sister  in  1906;  her
13    family traveled to Valley Park, Missouri where her father was
14    living  and  waiting  for  them;  she  had only four years of
15    education but taught herself arithmetic  and  spelling  at  a
16    genius level; and

17        WHEREAS,  Mary  Jaros Astroth moved to Alton, Illinois at
18    the age of  12;  she  worked  at  the  Tannery  in  Hartford,
19    Illinois;  she married the late August "Whitey" Henry Astroth
20    on October 4, 1919 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton;
21    and

22        WHEREAS,  Mary  Jaros  Astroth  became  a  United  States
23    citizen sometime in her late teens; the Astroth family  moved
24    to  Roxana,  Illinois where her husband served as Fire Chief;
25    in 1939, the Astroth family moved to Alton where they  bought
26    a  tavern on Belle Street and operated it until October 1970;
27    and

28        WHEREAS, Mary Jaros Astroth is the proud  mother  of  six
29    children;  the  grandmother  of  25  grandchildren; the great
30    grandmother  of  75  great-grandchildren;   the   great-great
31    grandmother   of   5   great-great   grandchildren;  and  the

 1    grandmother of 4 step-great, great grandchildren; and

 2        WHEREAS, Mary Jaros Astroth's greatest loves in her  life
 3    include  her  children,  grandchildren,  great-grandchildren,
 4    church sports, and pinochle; therefore, be it

 5        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
 6    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 7    we congratulate Mary Jaros Astroth on  the  occasion  of  her
 8    100th  birthday and extend to her our sincere best wishes for
 9    the future; and be it further

10        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
11    presented  to  Mary  Jaros  Astroth  as  an expression of our
12    respect and esteem.
