92_HR0096 LRB9205334KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The Railroad Retirement and Survivors 3 Improvement Act of 2000 was approved in a bipartisan effort 4 by 391 members of the United States House of Representatives 5 in the 106th Congress, including 19 of the 20 Illinois 6 members of the United States House of Representatives; and 7 WHEREAS, More than 80 United States Senators, including 8 both Illinois Senator Richard Durbin and Illinois Senator 9 Peter Fitzgerald, signed letters of support for this 10 legislation in 2000; and 11 WHEREAS, The bill, now before the 107th Congress, 12 modernizes the railroad retirement system for its 748,000 13 beneficiaries nationwide, including nearly 50,000 in 14 Illinois; and 15 WHEREAS, Railroad management, labor, and retiree 16 organizations have agreed to support this legislation; and 17 WHEREAS, This legislation provides tax relief to freight 18 railroads, Amtrak, and commuter lines; and 19 WHEREAS, This legislation provides benefit improvements 20 for surviving spouses of rail workers who currently suffer 21 deep cuts in income when the rail retiree dies; and 22 WHEREAS, No outside contributions from taxpayers are 23 needed to implement the changes called for in this 24 legislation; and 25 WHEREAS, All changes will be paid for from within the 26 railroad industry, including a full share by active 27 employees; therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 the General Assembly urges the United States Congress to -2- LRB9205334KBkbA 1 support the Railroad Retirement and Survivors Improvement Act 2 in the 107th Congress; and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be delivered to 4 the President of the United States, the President of the 5 United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House 6 of Representatives, and all members of the Illinois 7 congressional delegation.
