1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4 the lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, The American Mothers, Inc., Illinois Association
6 has announced that Kendra Workman Smiley of East Lynn,
7 Illinois is the 2001 Illinois Mother of the Year; and
8 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Noel
9 Workman, grew up in Paxton, Illinois; in 1974, she graduated
10 summa cum laude from the University of Illinois with her
11 degree in Physical Education; prior to graduation, she
12 married John Smiley; and
13 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley taught school while completing her
14 master's degree in Education from the University of North
15 Dakota; she taught school for several years before becoming a
16 mother; and
17 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley is a popular speaker and can be
18 heard daily on the New Life Radio network, encouraging
19 audiences with her "Live Life Intentionally" radio ministry;
20 she has authored many books which include "Empowered by
21 Choice", "Give your Heart a Good Spring Cleaning", It's a Mom
22 Thing", and "Helping your Kids make Good Choices"; she is a
23 regular speaker at Hearts at Home conferences and offers
24 marital advice in the Hearts at Home newsletter; and
25 WHEREAS, Presently, Kendra Smiley is serving on the State
26 Board for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; she is part
27 of a team of speakers presenting the "Understanding Your
28 Teenager" seminar; she also works on the staff with Christian
29 Leaders, Authors, and Speakers Seminar (CLASS); she is an
30 active member of the United Methodist Church of East Lynn
31 where she is a lay leader, Senior High Youth Leader,

1 Certified Lay speaker, and chairman of the Pastor Parish
2 Relations Committee; and
3 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley's loving and very proud family
4 include her husband, John, and her three sons, Matthew,
5 Aaron, and Jonathon; they live on a farm near East Lynn,
6 Illinois; and
7 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley was nominated for Mother of the
8 year by East Lynn United Methodist Church and Paxton United
9 Methodist Women; she was named as Mother of the Year because
10 she "represents the highest qualities of the home and family
11 life as well as a range of activities in her community"; Mrs.
12 Smiley will be considered for National Mother of the Year
13 honors at the National Convention of American Mothers, Inc.
14 in Portland Oregon in April, 2001; and
15 WHEREAS, Kendra Smiley will be honored at an awards
16 ceremony and reception on April 22, 2001 at the First
17 Lutheran Church in Paxton, Illinois; therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20 we congratulate Kendra Workman Smiley for her dedicated
21 efforts to her family, church, and community and for being
22 the recipient of the 2001 Illinois Mother of the Year award;
23 and be it further
24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
25 presented to Mrs. Kendra Workman Smiley as an expression of
26 our esteem.
