 1        AN ACT regarding vehicles.

 2        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section 5.  The  Illinois  Vehicle  Code  is  amended  by
 5    adding Section 12-802.1 as follows:

 6        (625 ILCS 5/12-802.1 new)
 7        Sec. 12-802.1.  Exterior reflective markings.
 8        (a)  Every  school  bus  sold  or manufactured for use in
 9    Illinois on or after January 1, 2002 must  be  equipped  with
10    exterior reflective markings on the rear and sides of the bus
11    that comply with rules adopted by the Secretary of State.
12        (b)  The  Secretary  shall  adopt  rules for implementing
13    this Section. The rules:
14             (1)  shall require the rear of school  buses  to  be
15        marked  with reflective material to outline the perimeter
16        of the back of the bus and  the  perimeter  of  the  rear
17        emergency exit.
18             (2)  shall  require  the  horizontal  application of
19        strips of reflective material, not less than 1.75  inches
20        wide,  above  the rear windows, and above the rear bumper
21        from the edges of the rear emergency exit  door  to  both
22        corners  of  the  school  bus  with  vertical  strips  of
23        reflective  material  at  each  corner  connected  to the
24        horizontal strips.
25             (3)  shall require  the  horizontal  application  of
26        strips  of reflective material, not less than 1.75 inches
27        wide, the entire length of the sides of  the  school  bus
28        and  located  equidistant  between  the floorline and the
29        beltline of the bus.
30             (4)  may require the marking of the front, rear,  or
31        both  bumpers  of  school  buses with reflective material

 1        between 1.75 inches and 2.25 inches wide, applied at a 45
 2        degree angle to the center line of the road surface.

 3        Section 99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect  upon
 4    becoming law.
