 1        AN ACT concerning lyme disease.

 2        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section 5.  The Department of Public  Health  Powers  and
 5    Duties  Law  of  the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is
 6    amended by changing Section 2310-390 as follows:

 7        (20 ILCS 2310/2310-390) (was 20 ILCS 2310/55.65)
 8        Sec.  2310-390.   Lyme  disease.   The  Department  shall
 9    establish policies, procedures, standards, and  criteria  for
10    the   collection,   maintenance,   and  exchange  of  medical
11    information necessary for the identification  and  evaluation
12    of  Lyme disease.  The Department shall include in its public
13    health  promotion  programs   and   materials   the   medical
14    information  about  the  symptoms,  causes,  prevention,  and
15    treatment of Lyme disease and how treatment may be obtained.
16        (b)  The  Department  shall conduct a study regarding the
17    prevalence, identification, and evaluation and  treatment  of
18    lyme  disease.  The  study  shall  include,  but  need not be
19    limited  to,  a  determination  of  whether   there   are   a
20    significant number of lyme disease cases that do not meet the
21    federal  definition,  a determination of health care provider
22    attitudes regarding  identification  and  treatment  of  lyme
23    disease, a determination of the volume of unreported cases of
24    lyme  disease,  coordination  with relevant State agencies to
25    identify potential existence of species capable  of  carrying
26    the  bacteria associated with lyme disease, and the amount of
27    information available to  treat  those  diagnosed  with  lyme
28    disease.  The  Department shall complete the study by January
29    1, 2002 and issue a report  regarding  its  findings  to  the
30    Governor and the General Assembly.
