91_HR0906 LRB9115013KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family, friends, colleagues, patients, and all those 5 touched by Dr. John E. Ultmann, who recently passed away; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. John E. Ultmann was born in Vienna, Austria 7 on January 6, 1925; he and his family moved to New York in 8 1938; he attended the Bronx High School of Science and 9 graduated in 1943; he was drafted into the United States Army 10 after graduation, where he served in the intelligence 11 service; after World War II he went to Austria to help 12 identify and interrogate war criminals and gather information 13 for the Nuremberg trials; and 14 WHEREAS, After his service with the Army, Dr. Ultmann 15 attended Brooklyn and Oberlin College, and then the College 16 of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, where he 17 later joined the faculty; and 18 WHEREAS, In 1968 Dr. Ultmann began his work with the 19 University of Chicago, where he specialized in cancer 20 treatment, specifically lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease as 21 well as advancing the use of chemotherapy; he was a past 22 director of, and helped in the creation of, the university's 23 Cancer Research Center; he served on many national and 24 international medical committees; and 25 WHEREAS, Dr. Ultmann was the author of over 450 papers, 26 review articles, book chapters, editorials, and abstracts; he 27 revised the medical school curriculum so students would have 28 more experience with patient care from the start; from 1976 29 to 1980 Dr. Ultmann was chairman of the board of scientific 30 counselors for the National Cancer Institute's Division of 31 Cancer Treatment; and -2- LRB9115013KBkbA 1 WHEREAS, Dr. Ultmann is credited with raising millions of 2 dollars for the medical center, including a $21 million gift 3 from the Richard L. Duchossois family; this gift saw the 4 building of the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine; and 5 WHEREAS, Dr. Ultmann saved many lives and pioneered the 6 use of new treatment for cancer; and 7 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. John E. Ultmann will be felt 8 by all who knew and were touched by this man, especially his 9 wife, Ruth; his daughters, Dr. Monica Ultmann and Dr. 10 Michelle Ultmann; his son, Barry Ultmann; and his five 11 grandchildren; therefore, be it 12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 13 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 14 we mourn the passing of Dr. John E. Ultmann of Chicago, 15 Illinois; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 17 presented to the family of Dr. John E. Ultmann.
