91_HR0705 LRB9113642DHmb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Chicago is the gateway to the Midwest, yet no 3 U.S. carrier offers daily nonstop service between Chicago and 4 China; and 5 WHEREAS, Lack of convenient daily service makes it more 6 difficult for Illinois passengers and businesses to access 7 China, and the lack of daily nonstop service increases travel 8 time for everyone, especially time-sensitive business 9 travelers; and 10 WHEREAS, United Airlines' proposed daily nonstop service 11 between Chicago and Shanghai would provide Illinois with 12 daily nonstop service to China's largest city and preeminent 13 commercial and financial center; and 14 WHEREAS, Less than daily service deprives passengers of 15 the flexibility and convenience especially important to 16 time-sensitive business travelers; and 17 WHEREAS, Illinois exports to China in 1998 exceeded 18 $900,000,000 in 1998, representing a 24% increase over the 19 previous 5 years; and 20 WHEREAS, International air traffic generates direct 21 revenues to the region, and United Airlines employs nearly 22 20,000 people in Illinois; therefore, be it 23 RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 24 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 25 we urge the U.S. Department of Transportation to issue 2 26 additional frequencies to United Airlines, thereby allowing 27 the airline to maintain daily nonstop service between Chicago 28 and Shanghai; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be delivered to 30 the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and to each member of -2- LRB9113642DHmb 1 the Illinois congressional delegation.
