1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the WIC (Women, Infants,
4 and Children) program on the occasion of its 25th
5 anniversary; and
6 WHEREAS, WIC began in Illinois in 1974, serving 12,000
7 people; today the program serves approximately 240,000
8 participants; since its beginnings, the WIC program in
9 Illinois has provided more than 6 million nutritional and
10 medical risk assessments, 12 million nutrition education
11 encounters, and 38 million supplemental food packages to
12 participants in the State; and
13 WHEREAS, WIC is a program that provides nutrition
14 education, health care referral, breastfeeding support, and
15 supplemental nutritional foods to people across the nation;
16 WIC enables parents to ensure that their children receive the
17 proper food and nutritional needs during the important
18 growing years of their lives; and
19 WHEREAS, In 1998 Illinois received the Dan Glickman
20 Pyramid of Excellence Award from the United States Department
21 of Agriculture for having the best delivery system in the WIC
22 program; Illinois has become a model for other states through
23 the data system used to collect information on the WIC
24 program; therefore, be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
26 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
27 we congratulate all the hard workers and participants of the
28 WIC program in Illinois on its anniversary; through the
29 combined efforts of all involved, the WIC program in Illinois
30 continues to set the standard for others; and be it further
31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
