91_HR0196 LRB9106527KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Centralia Elks Lodge #493 was instituted in the 3 city on May 31, 1899, with 37 members; and 4 WHEREAS, Harry M. Warner, the first Exalted Ruler, and 5 his small band embarked on a century which has produced much 6 in resources, effort, and good will to the Centralia area; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, The members found that their service to the 9 lodge and community produced deep and lasting relationships 10 which often lasted a lifetime, along with abundant self 11 satisfaction; and 12 WHEREAS, The City of Centralia has benefitted from the 13 100 years of Elkdom; through the efforts of the lodge to 14 bring cultural and recreational events to local citizens; 15 they have assumed leadership in the Halloween Parade; and 16 WHEREAS, The lodge has cooperated with other 17 organizations working for the benefit of the city including 18 such groups as the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Y.M.C.A., 19 Rotary, Lions, American Legion, and AMVETS; and 20 WHEREAS, The lodge has been generous with funds to assist 21 victims of the San Francisco earthquake and floods, fires, 22 and tornadoes; the lodge contributed in many ways to the 23 relief of the families involved in the Centralia Mine 24 Disaster of 1947; and 25 WHEREAS, The lodge has led in patriotic activities such 26 as sending gifts to servicemen, scrap drives, canteens for 27 serviceman, blood drives, and welcome home activities in 28 World Wars I and II, Korea, and the Vietnam War; and 29 WHEREAS, The lodge first observed Flag Day in 1907 and 30 greeted the establishment of the day as a legal holiday by -2- LRB9106527KBkb 1 President Truman; and 2 WHEREAS, The lodge's efforts to assist children included 3 Crippled Childrens Clinic, aid to hospitalized children, 4 Easter egg hunts, generous contributions to Christmas baskets 5 for less fortunate children, support of the Sister Kinny 6 Polio Clinic, scholarships, family picnics, and March of 7 Dimes campaigns; and 8 WHEREAS, The lodge promoted such recreational activities 9 as bowling, golf, billiards, pool, baseball, boxing, 10 horseshoes, handball, bridge, and other card games; and 11 WHEREAS, The lodge will appropriately mark this 100th 12 anniversary from May 6-9, 1999 with festivity and merriment 13 as well as a serious reflection on the orders past; 14 therefore, be it 15 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 16 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 17 we congratulate Elks Lodge #493 in Centralia, Illinois on the 18 occasion of its 100th anniversary; to Exalted Ruler Gary 19 Wolff, Leading Knight Dave Perkins, Loyal Knight Jimmy Alli, 20 Lecturing Knight Sam Alli, Secretary Gene White, Treasurer 21 Larry Roeckeman, Chaplain Richard Davis, Inner Guard Bob 22 Cohlmeyer, Tiler Dale Nelms, Esquire Brian Copple, Trustees 23 Darrell Phelps, David Mitchell, Mike Wiggins, Bob Griner, and 24 Dudley Henry, and all the members, we say congratulations and 25 best wishes for the future; and be it further 26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 27 presented to Elks Lodge #493 in Centralia, Illinois.
