90_SR0256 LRB9013365CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Jack Brickhouse, former voice of the Cubs, 4 White Sox, and Bears, on August 6, 1998; and 5 WHEREAS, Born in Peoria on January 14, 1916, he was the 6 son of John William "Will" Brickhouse and Daisy Brickhouse; 7 he graduated from Manual High School and attended Bradley 8 University for one year; and 9 WHEREAS, Jack Brickhouse was first on the air at age 18 10 on WMBD in his home town, making $17 a week; he was the first 11 of a long line of sportscasters for WMBD who broadcast 12 Bradley basketball; and 13 WHEREAS, In 1940, he went to Chicago, and with breaks for 14 military service a year to broadcast New York Giants baseball 15 games, Mr. Brickhouse called Cubs games from 1941 to 1981 and 16 White Sox games from 1940 to 1967; and 17 WHEREAS, In 1948, he became WGN-TV's first voice; boxing, 18 wrestling, baseball, basketball, football, he did them all; 19 and 20 WHEREAS, He covered five national political conventions, 21 Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1945 inauguration, one-on-one 22 sessions with six presidents, and an audience with Pope Paul 23 VI; and 24 WHEREAS, He was on the Board of Directors of Bradley 25 University, Chicago Boys Clubs, Western Golf Association, 26 Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Wesley Memorial Hospital, 27 City of Hope Board of Advisors of St. Francis Hospital, 28 DePaul University, and St. Procopius College; and 29 WHEREAS, He received many awards, including several Emmy 30 Awards, national sportswriters and broadcasters awards, Lydia -2- LRB9013365CBcb 1 Moss Bradley Award, and an honorary L.H.D. from Bradley 2 University; and 3 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 4 and friends, especially his wife, Patricia; his daughter, 5 Jean Sky; and his grandson; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 7 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow and regret 8 the death of Jack Brickhouse and extend our sincere 9 condolences to his family and friends; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to his widow, Patricia Brickhouse.
