90_SR0232 LRB9012973KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Dr. Philip Thorek; and 4 WHEREAS, Dr. Philip Thorek was the son of Dr. Max Thorek, 5 founder of Thorek Hospital (previously known as the American 6 Hospital of Chicago); Dr. Thorek received his medical degree 7 in 1930 from the University of Illinois College of Medicine; 8 Dr. Thorek was a distinguished professor of surgery for more 9 than fifty years at his alma mater; he twice received the 10 school's highest teaching honor, the University of Illinois 11 College of Medicine Golden Apple Teaching award, and wrote 12 five surgical textbooks for aspiring physicians; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Thorek was a fan of film and television as a 14 way to simplify medicine for the public; Dr. Thorek wrote, 15 produced, acted, and was a technical consultant for more than 16 80 films dealing with surgical practice and techniques; Dr. 17 Thorek was a recipient of the Golden Minerva Award at the 18 International Festival of Scientific Films; and 19 WHEREAS, Dr. Thorek was a diplomat in the American Board 20 of Surgery; a fellow in the International and American 21 College of Surgeons; and a founding member of the Association 22 of Clinical Anatomy; he was a lecturer across the United 23 States and was preparing for his 49th consecutive lecture to 24 the Texas Academy of Family Physicians at the time of his 25 death; and 26 WHEREAS, Dr. Thorek spent the last ten years as medical 27 director and chairman of the board at Thorek Hospital; Dr. 28 Thorek is survived by his wife, Agnes, and his daughter, 29 Phyllis; therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 31 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his -2- LRB9012973KBkb 1 family, friends, and colleagues, the death of Dr. Philip 2 Thorek; may they find peace and comfort in this time of loss; 3 and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 5 presented to the family of Dr. Philip Thorek.
