1 AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 709
2 AMENDMENT NO. . Amend Senate Bill 709, AS AMENDED,
3 in the title and in the introductory clause of Section 5, by
4 replacing "changing Section 2-3.112" each time it appears
5 with "changing Section 2-3.112 and adding Section 2-3.120";
6 and
7 by replacing Section 99 with the following:
8 "(105 ILCS 5/2-3.120 new)
9 Sec. 2-3.120. Giant Steps pilot program. From
10 appropriations made for purposes of this Section, the State
11 Board of Education shall implement and administer a Giant
12 Steps pilot program for the study and evaluation of autism
13 and to provide related teacher training. The program shall
14 be operated over a period of 3 school years, beginning with
15 the 1997-1998 school year. The State Board of Education is
16 authorized to make grants to school districts that apply to
17 participate in the Giant Steps program as implemented and
18 administered by the State Board of Education. The State
19 Board of Education shall by rule provide the form of
20 application and criteria to be used and applied in selecting
21 participating school districts.

1 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July
2 1, 1997, except that the changes to Section 2-3.112 of the
3 School Code take effect January 1, 1998.".
