90_HR0622 LRB9013025CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire hit his 3 sixty-second home run of the year on September 8, 1998; and 4 WHEREAS, This feat eclipsed the previous single season 5 home run record of sixty-one set by New York Yankee Roger 6 Maris; and 7 WHEREAS, The Maris record had stood since 1961, leading 8 some to believe it would never be broken; and 9 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire nearly reached the record in the 10 1997 season when he hit fifty-eight home runs while with both 11 the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals; and 12 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire and other sluggers, such as Chicago 13 Cub Sammy Sosa and Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey, Jr., have 14 engaged in a highly entertaining season long chase of the 15 home run record; and 16 WHEREAS, This event has served to restore fan enthusiasm 17 in professional baseball; and 18 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire has withstood considerable pressure 19 and scrutiny throughout this year with admirable grace and 20 humility; and 21 WHEREAS, Now that the record has been broken, some feel 22 Mark McGwire may hit as many as seventy home runs before the 23 end of the season; therefore, be it 24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 25 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 26 congratulate Mark McGwire on his setting the single season 27 home run record; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 29 presented to Mark McGwire and the St. Louis Cardinal baseball -2- LRB9013025CBcb 1 organization.
