90_HR0615 LRB9012970KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lillian 4 Bates of Chicago, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Lillian Bates was born in Brownsville, Tennessee 6 on May 20, 1915; her parents were Samuel Daniels and Vanilla 7 Hubbard; after graduating from the St. Louis Public School 8 System in 1932, Miss Bates relocated to Chicago where she 9 enrolled in the Provident School of Nursing under the 10 tutelage of Anna Malone, graduating in 1935 as a registered 11 nurse; and 12 WHEREAS, Lillian Bates was a devout Catholic and member 13 of St. Elizabeth Church; she was a faithful employee of both 14 federal and State governments for over forty-six years; and 15 WHEREAS, Lillian Bates served as President of AFSCME 16 Local 1610 and as a member of AFSCME Council 31; she was a 17 founding member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists; 18 and she was a confidante and adviser to the late Mayor of 19 Chicago, Harold Washington; and 20 WHEREAS, Lillian Bates is survived by her two sons and 21 daughter-in-law, Lamar and Callie Bates, and Walter Bates; 22 her daughter, Janet Rowland; her sisters, Laura Brown and 23 Josephine Fullilove; her brother Harold Daniels; many 24 cherished grandchildren great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many 26 friends; therefore, be it 27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 28 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 29 mourn, along with her family and friends, the death of 30 Lillian Bates; may her family and friends find comfort in 31 this time of loss; and be it further -2- LRB9012970KBkb 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the family of Lillian Bates.
