1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Coach Itch Jones, Coach
4 of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign baseball
5 team on being selected for induction into the College Coaches
6 Hall of Fame by the American Baseball Coaches Association;
7 and
8 WHEREAS, Coach Jones is from Herrin, Illinois; he
9 graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1960,
10 lettering in baseball and basketball; in 1961 he earned his
11 Bachelor's of Science degree in physical education; he
12 received his Master's degree in physical education from SIU
13 in 1965; while attending SIU, Coach Jones was the baseball
14 MVP in 1957 and earned All-Interstate Intercollegiate
15 Athletic Conference honors three times; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Itch Jones went on to play professional
17 baseball in the Baltimore Orioles minor league system; in
18 1962 he became head basketball coach in Jacksonville; in 1966
19 he began his collegiate career at MacMurray College; in 1969
20 he returned to SIU as an assistant coach, and became the head
21 coach in 1970; and
22 WHEREAS, Before coaching at the U. of I., Coach Jones was
23 the head coach of Southern Illinois University for twenty-one
24 years; Coach Jones led the Salukis to ten NCAA tournament
25 appearances and three trips to the College World Series; the
26 team placed second at their College World Series appearance
27 in 1971, and had third place finishes in 1974 and 1977; and
28 WHEREAS, In his last year at SIU Coach Jones led his team
29 to a sixth Missouri Valley Conference Championship in
30 fourteen seasons; in 1990 Coach Jones was named the NCAA
31 Division I Diamond Baseball Coach of the Year; Coach Jones
32 has been selected national coach of the year, the Adirondack

1 National Coach of the Year in 1971, and The Sporting News
2 Coach of the Year in 1978; and
3 WHEREAS, Coach Jones hit the mark in 1998 with 1,000
4 victories; he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year; his
5 team won the Big Ten Championship; the team received an
6 At-large bid to the NCAA Regionals, where they lost to number
7 one seeded Florida, by one run in eleven innings; and
8 WHEREAS, Coach Itch Jones was inducted into the College
9 Coaches Hall of Fame by the American Baseball Coaches
10 Association in 1998; he was the 19th Division I coach to win
11 1,000 games; and
12 WHEREAS, Coach Itch Jones is married to Sue and they have
13 two children, Michael and Susan; they also have one
14 grandchild, Richard Caleb Jones; therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17 congratulate Coach Itch Jones of the University of Illinois
18 at Urbana-Champaign, on his induction into the College
19 Coaches Hall of Fame; and be it further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to Coach Itch Jones.
