90_HR0566 LRB9012407KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to congratulate A. Gerald Erickson of 4 Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago, Illinois on his 5 retirement as President of the organization; and 6 WHEREAS, Metropolitan Family Services began in 1857 as 7 the Chicago Relief and Aid Society; the name later changed to 8 United Charities and then in 1996 to Metropolitan Family 9 Services; Metropolitan Family Services helps 80,000 families 10 in 22 locations throughout Chicago and Cook and DuPage 11 Counties; and 12 WHEREAS, Metropolitan Family Services provides 13 individuals, families, and communities with programs such as 14 individual and family counseling, school-based programs, 15 senior services, mental health services, consumer credit 16 counseling services, job placement assistance, and help in 17 making life easier; the agency will work with the community 18 in helping to strengthen the family; the mission of the 19 agency has changed over the years, now dealing with drug 20 abuse and drug issues, safety issues, and the disintegration 21 of the community; together with Jerry Erickson, the 22 organization has helped people for over 100 years; and 23 WHEREAS, A. Gerald "Jerry" Erickson was born on July 30, 24 1933; he served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958; 25 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University 26 of North Dakota in 1955 and his Master of Arts degree from 27 the University of Chicago, School of Social Service 28 Administration in 1960; upon receiving his degree from the 29 University of Chicago, Mr. Erickson went to work for 30 Metropolitan Family Services in clinical social work 31 practice; Mr. Erickson went on to work as a supervisor, the 32 director of the suburban division, and the Assistant -2- LRB9012407KBkb 1 Executive Director, as well as working in part-time private 2 clinical practice; in 1971 he became the President and Chief 3 Executive Officer of Metropolitan Family Services, making the 4 decision to retire in April of 1998; he currently is 5 President Emeritus, training his successor to fill his 6 position; and 7 WHEREAS, Jerry Erickson is a member of the National 8 Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Certified 9 Social Workers, the United Way Agency Executives Advisory 10 Council, and the Visiting Committee of the University of 11 Chicago School of Social Service Administration; he is a 12 member of Family Service America, Large Agency Executives 13 Council; he is a member of the Advisory Council of the 14 National Consortium on Alternatives for Youth at Risk, Inc.; 15 he is a former member of the Editorial Board of 16 Administration in Social Work; and 17 WHEREAS, Jerry Erickson is a past chairman of the 18 Committee on Family Policy, Family Service America; he is a 19 past commissioner and chairman of the Guardianship and 20 Advocacy Commission for the State of Illinois; he is a past 21 member of the Advisory Committee for the Jane Addams Center 22 for Social Policy & Research at the University of Illinois at 23 Chicago; he is a past member of the Advisory Committee of the 24 Family Institute of New York Academy for Educational 25 Development; he is a past chairman for the Chicago Alliance 26 for Collaborative Effort; he is a past member of the Board of 27 Directors for Family Service America; he is a past member of 28 the Board of Directors for United Way of Chicago; and he is a 29 past president of the Alumni Association for the School of 30 Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago; 31 and 32 WHEREAS, Jerry Erickson has also been affiliated with the 33 University Club of Chicago and the Economic Club of Chicago; -3- LRB9012407KBkb 1 and 2 WHEREAS, Jerry Erickson is married to Janet Marshall 3 Erickson; they have two children and four grandchildren; 4 therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 6 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 7 congratulate A. Gerald "Jerry" Erickson on a job well done; 8 we wish him continued success in his future; and be it 9 further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to A. Gerald "Jerry" Erickson.
