90_HR0519 LRB9012098KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of 4 Benjamin Gunn of Chicago, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Benjamin Gunn was born in Talladega, Alabama on 6 January 24, 1906; his parents were Mathilda and Benjamin 7 Gunn; he was the youngest of five brothers and one sister; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, Benjamin Gunn attended school in Talladega, but 10 had to go to work after the early deaths of his parents; and 11 WHEREAS, His first marriage was to Alma Omega Oliver, who 12 preceded him in death; he then moved to Detroit, Michigan to 13 look for better employment; his second marriage was to 14 Mighnon Penn Person, who also preceded him in death; he moved 15 on to Maywood, Illinois and went to work for the American Can 16 Company; he joined with Canaan A.M.E. Church under Reverend 17 J.C. Brewer; and 18 WHEREAS, Ben Gunn joined Jeptha Lodge #90 F. & A.M. and 19 was elevated to the office of Worshipful Master; he helped 20 start a Degree Team that traveled across the the 21 jurisdiction; he joined Dorcas Chapter #92 O.E.S. and was 22 elevated to the office of Worthy Patron; and 23 WHEREAS, Ben Gunn's third marriage was to Lula Belle 24 Mackey; Ben retired from Hertz Rent-a-Car as a service agent, 25 and then went to work with Andy Frain Security System as a 26 security guard; he remained with the company for seventeen 27 years and had perfect attendance, except for a brief time 28 when he suffered a broken ankle; and 29 WHEREAS, Ben Gunn enjoyed traveling by car, the sport of 30 baseball, and people; he loved his children, he loved to eat 31 home cooked food, and he enjoyed "dress-up affairs"; and -2- LRB9012098KBkb 1 WHEREAS, Benjamin Gunn is survived by his wife, Lula 2 Belle; his sons, Charles B. and Benjamin, Jr.; his three 3 daughters, Alma Prince, Betty Warren, and Mighnon McKinnon 4 and her husband, Bernard; two sisters-in-law, Bernice 5 Townsend and Rose Phillips; a favorite nephew, Ernest Young; 6 eighteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; four 7 great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; 8 therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 11 mourn, along with his family and friends, the death of 12 Benjamin Gunn; may his family find peace in this time of 13 loss; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to the family of Benjamin Gunn.
