90_HR0476 LRB9012156KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to honor Dr. Sam Mikaelian, 4 Superintendent of the Wilmette Public School District 39, on 5 his retirement; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Mikaelian is a native of Wisconsin; he is a 7 graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a Master's 8 degree from Columbia University in New York; his doctorate 9 was obtained from Northwestern University; and 10 WHEREAS, After joining District 39 in 1967, Dr. Sam 11 Mikaelian had many achievements over the years in many 12 different areas, particularly in the area of providing 13 services to students with special needs when he started the 14 District's first program for gifted students, established 15 multi-disciplinary "satellite team" approaches to serving 16 children, initiated social work and learning disabilities 17 programs in the District, created early child development 18 programs, and introduced early childhood screening; and 19 WHEREAS, In enhancing educational programs for all 20 students, Dr. Mikaelian added a foreign language program to 21 the elementary schools, initiated department chairs for the 22 fine arts and related arts, expanded the Summer Enrichment 23 Program, introduced supportive reading and mathematics 24 classes for students needing reinforcement, and established 25 the first before school child care program in the District; 26 and 27 WHEREAS, Dr. Mikaelian introduced new models for ongoing 28 curriculum renewal, expanded the summer curriculum writing 29 projects, created the first annual two-day FOCUS Conference 30 for teachers, restructured the District's school attendance 31 patterns, opened the District's first middle school for 32 grades 5 and 6, initiated a rigorous recruitment and -2- LRB9012156KBkbA 1 selection process for new teachers, developed a new 2 continuing education initiative for staff development, worked 3 toward the establishment of a non-profit educational 4 foundation, expanded the use of technology in all the 5 schools, encouraged the creation of the School Advisory 6 Council, and recommended the Superior School Study, as well 7 as other major reports which capitalize on the expertise of 8 local volunteers; and 9 WHEREAS, District 39 truly is losing a valuable leader 10 with Dr. Mikaelian's retirement; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 12 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 13 congratulate Dr. Mikaelian on his retirement from District 39 14 in Wilmette, Illinois; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to Dr. Sam Mikaelian, along with our sincerest 17 regards.
