1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart serves as an economic engine for
3 Illinois generating $226 million in sales tax in 1997 alone;
4 and
5 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart contributes to the economic well-being
6 of private citizens by employing 28,510 Illinois citizens;
7 and
8 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart's presence contributes significantly to
9 the health of native-Illinois businesses due to Wal-Mart's
10 purchasing of over $11 billion of goods and services from
11 2,306 Illinois suppliers; and
12 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart's contributions extend well beyond
13 economics and into $3 million of scholarship support for 122
14 Illinois students; and
15 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart's educational support has included
16 education grants to Illinois schools in the names of the 94
17 Wal-Mart Teachers of the Year; and
18 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart extended economic and development
19 grants honoring 42 Illinois business leaders and 20
20 small-town government leaders and not-for-profit
21 organizations; and
22 WHEREAS, Wal-Mart never forgets the personal touch
23 provided by its People Greeters as the customer enters any
24 Wal-Mart store; therefore, be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
26 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
27 recognize the significant role Wal-Mart and it's employees
28 fulfill economically and the larger benefits that accrue to
29 Illinois citizens through Wal-Mart's support of educational
30 and not-for-profit entities; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That we congratulate Wal-Mart on its success to
2 date and extend our best wishes for its continued well-being
3 and that of its employees; and be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to Wal-Mart.
