90_HR0437 LRB9011990KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, 1998 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 3 founding of the modern, democratic state of Israel, which was 4 officially declared an independent nation on May 14, 1948; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Israel will hold a series of events to celebrate 7 its Golden Jubilee commemorating fifty years of independence, 8 economic and social progress as well as scientific 9 innovation; and 10 WHEREAS, Under the guidance of great leadership, Israel 11 has flourished and managed to maintain a stable and dynamic 12 society whose citizens enjoy a democratic government and a 13 high standard of living; and 14 WHEREAS, Despite periods of conflict with surrounding 15 states as well as continuing terrorist attacks, Israel has 16 striven for an end to hostilities in the Middle East and has 17 embarked on the peace process with its neighbors; and 18 WHEREAS, Israel and the State of Illinois have a strong, 19 ongoing relationship which was formalized in 1988 by a 20 Memorandum of Intent that created the Illinois-Israel 21 Initiative, which called for projects of mutual economic 22 benefit through improved trade, technology, development, 23 science, agriculture, and tourism; and 24 WHEREAS, This Illinois-Israel connection has proven to be 25 mutually beneficial as evidenced by the number of shared 26 bi-national research and development grants that have gone to 27 Illinois research institutions and business exchanges between 28 Israeli and Illinois corporations; and 29 WHEREAS, Israel's contributions to the world also include 30 pioneering educational and social programs which have created 31 innovative approaches to pre-school education, unemployment, -2- LRB9011990KBkbA 1 environmental protection, and drug abuse which have been 2 successfully implemented in Israel and have already, in some 3 cases, been replicated in Illinois; therefore, be it 4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 5 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 6 congratulate Israel on the occasion of its Fiftieth 7 Anniversary; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to the Israel Consulate in Chicago, Illinois.
