90_HR0425 LRB9012048KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The Centralia Historical Hall of Fame has 3 announced its 1998 inductees; and 4 WHEREAS, Ben and Gladys Ober will be the first couple 5 installed into the Hall of Fame; and 6 WHEREAS, Ben Ober moved to Centralia in 1926; in 1936 he 7 was elected to the board of directors of City National Bank 8 (later Magna Bank); in 1939 he was elected president and 9 chairman of the board; Ben Ober was the first chairman of the 10 Centralia Industrial Commission, formed in 1961; he was a 11 member of the Centralia City Schools Board of Education from 12 1938 to 1941; in 1941 he was president of the Centralia 13 Chamber of Commerce; he was a trustee of the Centralia 14 Foundation; he was a member of Centralia Industries; and he 15 was director of St. Mary's Hospital from 1967 to 1993; and 16 WHEREAS, Ben Ober received many honors, including: an 17 honor by the St. Mary's Madonna Club in 1997, the Centralia 18 Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 19 1956, and the Centralia Industrial Commission Outstanding 20 Leadership Award in 1965; in 1987 he received an award from 21 the Chamber of Commerce for his service to Centralia, and in 22 1987 he received a fifty year award from the Illinois Bankers 23 Association; and 24 WHEREAS, Ben Ober was once considered one of the most 25 important downstate Democratic leaders, serving as delegate 26 to the 1960 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles; and 27 WHEREAS, Gladys Ober was a founder of the Centralia 28 Cultural Society and an active member for many years; she was 29 a leader and member of the Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra 30 and a friend of the St. Louis Symphony; she was a graduate of 31 Bush Conservatory in Chicago; she was a life-long resident of -2- LRB9012048KBkb 1 Centralia and a music teacher; Mrs. Ober was also given many 2 awards, including a Distinguished Service Award from the 3 Centralia Jaycees; and 4 WHEREAS, Ben and Gladys Ober were active members of the 5 First Christian Church; Gladys served on both the organ 6 committee and the new sanctuary building committee; 7 therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 10 congratulate the Centralia Historical Hall of Fame on its 11 choices for 1998 inductees into the Hall of Fame; and be it 12 further 13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 14 presented to the Centralia Historical Hall of Fame.
