90_HR0397 LRB9011722CBcbB 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The American Discovery Trail is America's first 3 coast-to-coast hiking, biking, and equestrian trail that 4 extends over 6,300 miles from the Pacific coast to the 5 Atlantic coast, passing through national parks and forests, 6 historic sites, and cities and towns; and 7 WHEREAS, The American Discovery Trail passes through 8 Illinois in both a southern and a northern route; the 9 northern portion runs from the Quad Cities on the Mississippi 10 to a point near Momence where it enters Indiana; the Hennepin 11 Canal, I&M Canal, and Old Plank Road Trail form most of the 12 northern section; the River to River Trail, passing through 13 the Shawnee National Forest is the basis for the southern 14 route; and 15 WHEREAS, 1998 is a particularly good year to launch the 16 Illinois American Discovery Trail because it is the 150th 17 anniversary of the opening of the I&M Canal and the 30th 18 anniversary of the National Trails System Act; and 19 WHEREAS, Illinois' trails provide safe places for 20 healthful exercise, improve the quality-of-life of 21 communities, help protect natural resources and offer 22 alternative transportation routes; and 23 WHEREAS, Beginning June 12, a group of Illinoisans will 24 begin walking and bicycling across Illinois along the 25 northern route of the American Discovery Trail; therefore, be 26 it 27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 28 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 29 take great pride in recognizing the Illinois American 30 Discovery Trail; and be it further 31 RESOLVED, That we salute the American Discovery -2- LRB9011722CBcbB 1 Trail-Illinois Society; and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 3 presented to Sandye Wexler and the members of the ADT 4 Illinois Society.
