1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Richard Sanders,
4 President of VietNow, on contributing so much to his fellow
5 veterans; and
6 WHEREAS, VietNow is an Illinois not-for-profit
7 corporation and a national veteran's organization comprised
8 of men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces
9 from 1957 through Now (meaning infinity); and
10 WHEREAS, Richard Sanders has been a member of VietNow
11 since 1985 and is a charter member of the Rock River Valley
12 Chapter located in Dixon, Illinois; Mr. Sanders served as a
13 chapter officer; he has held five committee positions at the
14 chapter, a committee slot at the Illinois Department, and
15 serves on three VietNow National Levels; he was elected to
16 the National Board of Directors of VietNow in 1992; appointed
17 to fill a vacancy in the office of National Vice President in
18 1994; in 1994 he won the election for national president and
19 is currently finishing up his second term in that position;
20 and
21 WHEREAS, Richard Sanders has made VietNow a viable
22 organization; he paid off the mortgage on the national
23 headquarters; he has paid off major obligations while
24 updating and networking the administrative equipment for the
25 national headquarters and board members; VietNow serves on
26 the Board of the National Vietnam and Gulf War Coalition;
27 VietNow has become a member organization of the National
28 Coalition for Homeless Veteran's and the National Gulf War
29 Resource Center;and
30 WHEREAS, Through the hard work and dedication of Richard
31 Sanders, VietNow has helped to restore pride to veterans of
32 the Vietnam era; membership and chapters have increased; a

1 scholarship endowment fund has been established for the
2 dependents of veterans; and
3 WHEREAS, Under the direction of Richard Sanders, VietNow
4 has continued working outside the organization with such
5 groups as the Arthritis Telethon, Chicago Stand Down for the
6 homeless, and WGN Pumpkinfest; Mr. Sanders saw that money was
7 given to help the victims of the Fox River area flood and to
8 a family of a homeless veteran, so that the veteran could
9 have a proper funeral after dying on the streets of Chicago;
10 Richard Sanders has pushed for and received a complete
11 re-writing of the VietNow National Bylaws so that the
12 organization could be ready for the next century; therefore,
13 be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 request June 30, 1998 to be named "Richard Sanders Day"
17 within the State of Illinois; and be it further
18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to VietNow President Richard Sanders.
