90_HR0335 LRB9011720CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Twenty-five years ago, on February 12, 1973 the 3 first of U.S. prisoners of war who had been tortured and 4 starved in North Vietnamese prison camps took their first 5 steps toward freedom; and 6 WHEREAS, Among those Americans freed from Hanoi's Hoa Lo 7 prison was Colonel Sam Johnson of Texas, a decorated Air 8 Force combat pilot who had been shot down nearly seven years 9 earlier; and 10 WHEREAS, In March of 1973, a second group of prisoners, 11 among whom was James H. Kasler, one of the greatest and most 12 decorated pilots in the history of the Air Force; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Kasler, now owner of the South Shore Golf 14 Course in Momence, was freed after 6 1/2 years as a prisoner 15 of war; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Kasler was considered one of America's 17 greatest flyers and combat pilots; he was also rated one of 18 the toughest and most courageous U.S. prisoners of war; 19 therefore, be it 20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 21 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 22 are honored to recognize the men who were released from the 23 North Vietnamese prisoner of war camps twenty-five years ago 24 and especially James H. Kasler; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 26 presented to James H. Kasler.
