90_HR0217 LRB9006460PTcw 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, We have learned with sadness that Mr. Erwin J. 3 Mahlandt of Breese, Illinois passed away on May 23, 1993; and 4 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt was born on April 18, 1904, in 5 Breese, to William and Catherine Mahlandt; he attended Breese 6 Public and St. John's Parochial Schools and graduated from 7 Carlyle High School in 1923; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt worked for more than sixty years in 9 the newspaper and publishing business after buying the Breese 10 Journal at the age of twenty-one on May 6, 1925; he was 11 instrumental in establishing and maintaining a local paper 12 for Breese and the surrounding community; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt married Evelyn Helwig, the daughter 14 of Mr. and Mrs. August Helwig, in 1926; she assisted and 15 supported his efforts at the Breese Journal; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt and his newspaper recorded the 17 daily events of Breese as it grew from a country town with 18 dirt streets to a modern community of more than three 19 thousand people, and he saw the Breese Journal grow from an 20 eight-page paper with 400 subscribers to a newspaper with a 21 circulation of more than five thousand; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt also managed a general insurance 23 agency for several years, served as Postmaster for 16 years, 24 and was a director of the State Bank of Breese; and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt made many contributions to the 26 community; he was an active member of the Breese Building 27 Committee and participated for more than 50 years as a 28 charter member of the Breese Lions Club; and 29 WHEREAS, Mr. Mahlandt's son Jerry and grandsons Steve and 30 David have continued the Mahlandt family tradition of -2- LRB9006460PTcw 1 publishing the Breese Journal through three generations; the 2 Breese Journal celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary 3 edition on February 16, 1995; and 4 WHEREAS, The death of Mr. E.J. Mahlandt was a great loss 5 to his family, including his wife Evelyn Mahlandt, his son 6 Jerry Mahlandt, his grandchildren Marsha, David, and Steven, 7 and his four great grandchildren; he will be missed by his 8 many friends and all the citizens of Breese; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 11 express our deep sorrow at the passing of E.J. Mahlandt, 12 offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family, and join his many 13 friends and all the citizens of Breese in honoring his 14 memory; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to Mrs. Evelyn Mahlandt with our sincere 17 condolences.
