1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Those individuals who minister to the spiritual
3 needs of others are worthy of the highest respect and
4 admiration; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of this House that
6 the Reverend Anthony J. Vader has announced his retirement as
7 pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church in Chicago; and
8 WHEREAS, Born on May 31, 1926 in Chicago, Anthony Vader
9 attended Quigley Seminary North and St. Mary of the Lake
10 Seminary; he did post-graduate study at the University of
11 Chicago and Loyola University and post-doctoral studies at
12 Tangaza University, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa; and
13 WHEREAS, Anthony Vader was ordained to the holy
14 priesthood in 1952; he was assigned to Holy Name of Mary
15 Church on January 31, 1968; and
16 WHEREAS, A published author and noted speaker, Father
17 Vader has received many honors and awards, including the
18 Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society Award from Loyola University;
19 and
20 WHEREAS, He has been affiliated with the American
21 Sociological Association, the Midwest Sociological
22 Association, the Association for the Scientific Study of
23 Religion, the Association for the Study of Religion, the
24 National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice, and the
25 Art Institute of Chicago; he was selected by Dr. Martin
26 Luther King, Jr. as a charter member of Operation
27 Breadbasket; and
28 WHEREAS, As pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church, Father
29 Vader has shepherded his parishioners with inspiring zeal;
30 after his arrival at the parish, Father Vader rose to the
31 challenges facing him; pledge drives were organized and the

1 $250,000 parish debt was paid off; and
2 WHEREAS, As the congregation increased, a larger church
3 was needed and Father Vader again rose to the challenge; the
4 new church was dedicated in 1972 by John Cardinal Cody; over
5 the years, the Catholic population in the community doubled
6 and the parish acquired a mission, Sacred Heart Church; the
7 parish school holds the highest educational standards in the
8 area; and
9 WHEREAS, Father Anthony Vader has exemplified the highest
10 standards of leadership; the guidance, devotion, and care
11 that he has shown to the people of Holy Name of Mary Church
12 will long be remembered; and
13 WHEREAS, The illustrious life and extraordinary service
14 of Father Vader are a shining example of the love of God to
15 all the people of this State, of whatever faith; therefore,
16 be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 join with the parishioners of Holy Name of Mary Church in
20 thanking and applauding Father Anthony Vader as he retires as
21 pastor; that we commend him for his long and faithful
22 dedication to God's work; and that we extend to him our
23 sincere best wishes for continued success in his future; and
24 be it further
25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
26 presented to him as an expression of our great respect and
27 admiration.
