90_HR0063 LRB9005379KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Paul Simon, who retired from the U.S. Senate on 3 December 31, 1996, has given more than forty years of public 4 service to the people of the State of Illinois, his nation 5 and, indeed, to the world; and 6 WHEREAS, Paul Simon's public service has been 7 characterized with a decency, integrity, and goodness seldom 8 equaled; and 9 WHEREAS, Paul Simon has encouraged others to use their 10 lives, as he has used his own, in the struggle to alleviate 11 the hunger of those who are hungry, the struggles of the 12 uneducated, and to restore hope to the hopeless; and 13 WHEREAS, Paul Simon has always used, and affirmed the use 14 of, his writing as a tool by which to inform and entertain 15 the public and aid in its battle against those forces that 16 would destroy society; and 17 WHEREAS, Paul Simon has been an outstanding citizen and 18 servant of Illinois citizens; and 19 WHEREAS, Through all of these endeavors, Paul Simon has 20 maintained a sense of humor and humility about himself and 21 his place in the scheme of things that have brought honor to 22 the State of Illinois merely by his having been a part of it; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, In retirement Paul Simon has chosen to remain in 25 his native Illinois and continue to educate, nurture, and 26 inspire others as the holder of the Paul Simon Endowed Chair 27 and Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Department at 28 Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois; 29 therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE -2- LRB9005379KBkb 1 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 2 honor Paul Simon by declaring April 15, 1997 to be Paul Simon 3 Day in the State of Illinois, to honor our unique State 4 treasure and celebrate his four decades of honorable public 5 service; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to Paul Simon.
