90_HR0011 LRB9001490KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were 3 pleased to hear of the appointment of fellow Representative 4 Barbara Flynn Currie to the position of House Majority 5 Leader; and 6 WHEREAS, Barbara Flynn Currie has been a member of the 7 House of Representatives since her election in 1978; and 8 WHEREAS, Barbara Flynn Currie was born on May 3, 1940 in 9 LaCrosse, Wisconsin; after her high school graduation she 10 attended the University of Chicago, receiving both her 11 Bachelor in Arts and Master in Arts; and 12 WHEREAS, After her graduation, Barbara Flynn Currie 13 worked for the National Opinion Research Center, serving as 14 an Assistant Study Director; while working for the Center she 15 researched the changing roles of urban women in politics; and 16 WHEREAS, Barbara Flynn Currie left the Center, and ran 17 for Representative in the 25th district; upon winning her 18 seat, she served as Assistant Majority Leader in 1993 and 19 Assistant Democratic Leader in 1995; and 20 WHEREAS, Representative Currie sponsored and passed the 21 original Illinois Freedom of Information Act, and has 22 continued to make improvements to the law; her continued 23 efforts have earned her the Award for Service from the 24 National Center for Freedom of Information Studies; and 25 WHEREAS, Representative Currie has won numerous awards, 26 including the Best Legislator Award from the National 27 Association of Social Workers; the 100% Award from the 28 Illinois Women's Political Caucus; the Outstanding Legislator 29 Award from the Illinois Women's Substance Abuse Coalition; 30 the Best Legislator Award from the Independent Voters of 31 Illinois- Independent Precinct Organizations; and the -2- LRB9001490KBkb 1 Legislator of the Year Award from the Illinois Association of 2 Rehabilitation Facilities; and 3 WHEREAS, Barbara Flynn Currie has advocated early 4 learning programs, sponsoring the bill that created State 5 support of early education for disadvantaged youngsters; and 6 WHEREAS, Barbara Flynn Currie is the loving wife of 7 David, a Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, and 8 the proud mother of Stephen and Margaret; therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 11 acknowledge the appointment of Barbara Flynn Currie as the 12 first woman to serve as House Majority Leader; and be it 13 further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to Representative Currie and her family.
