90_HJ0030enr HJ0030 Enrolled HDSHJRxxxxKSr380mm 1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 30 2 WHEREAS, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, a native of Columbia, 3 South Carolina, received a bachelor's degree from Saint 4 Mary's Seminary, Baltimore and a master's degree in education 5 from the Catholic University of America; and 6 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was ordained in 1952 for the 7 Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as 8 parish priest, Chancellor and Vicar General; and 9 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was appointed Auxiliary 10 Bishop of Atlanta in 1966 by Pope Paul VI and in November, 11 1972 he became Archbishop of Cincinnati, in which position he 12 served for nearly 10 years; and 13 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was appointed Archbishop of 14 Chicago by Pope John Paul II on July 10, 1982; he was 15 elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals in January, 1983; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin served on numerous committees 18 for both the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the 19 United States Catholic Conference; he was Chairman of the 20 National Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Marriage 21 and Family Life and Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on War 22 and Peace; and 23 WHEREAS, The Cardinal was also Chancellor of the Catholic 24 Church Extension Society and the University of St. Mary of 25 the Lake and he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees 26 of the Catholic University of America and Chairman of the 27 President's National Advisory Council, University of South 28 Carolina; and 29 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin has received many accolades, 30 including numerous honorary doctorates from colleges and 31 universities in the United States and Europe; and HJ0030 Enrolled -2- HDSHJRxxxxKSr380mm 1 WHEREAS, On September 9, 1996, President Clinton awarded 2 Cardinal Bernardin the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the 3 nation's highest civilian honor bestowed on individuals who 4 have made important contributions to their communities and 5 the nation; and 6 WHEREAS, The City of Chicago and the State of Illinois 7 have lost a great leader; and 8 WHEREAS, His leadership helped unite the Catholic 9 community of Chicago, his work influenced the lives of many 10 individuals and served as a beacon of hope for people of all 11 faiths and he was an advocate for numerous causes; he was 12 posthumously awarded the Lincoln Academy highest State level 13 honor; and 14 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin continued to uplift and 15 inspire us even after being diagnosed with cancer; and 16 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin has begun a new life and he 17 will be deeply missed by all those who knew him and heard of 18 his works on earth; and 19 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin warrants a public tribute; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, North Avenue in Chicago (Illinois Route 64), 22 from Lake Shore Drive to Interstate 294, is traveled by many 23 persons loved by the Cardinal; therefore, be it 24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 25 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 26 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, That in celebration of the life of 27 His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Bernardin in sincere remembrance 28 of his devoted service and compassion for all persons, the 29 General Assembly therefore designates that the part of 30 Illinois Route 64 that is within the State of Illinois, 31 specifically that portion between Lake Shore Drive and HJ0030 Enrolled -3- HDSHJRxxxxKSr380mm 1 Interstate 294, as the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Memorial 2 Avenue which shall bear the name "Cardinal Bernardin Avenue"; 3 and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That in cooperation with the appropriate local 5 governments the Illinois Department of Transportation shall 6 post appropriate signs, markers or plaques along the highway 7 in recognition of this designation; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this Resolution be 9 presented to his family, to the Archdiocese of Chicago to 10 commemorate the life and works of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, 11 and to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of 12 Transportation.
