Amend House Bill 1701 by replacing 3 the title with the following: 4 "AN ACT relating to education."; and 5 by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the 6 following: 7 "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding 8 Sections 10-20.8b and 34-18.17 as follows: 9 (105 ILCS 5/10-20.8b new) 10 Sec. 10-20.8b. Homework policy. 11 (a) The school board of each school district shall 12 establish and enforce a homework policy for the 1997-98 13 school year and each school year thereafter that is 14 consistent with the requirements of this Section. Under that 15 policy, the school board shall mandate that homework be 16 regularly assigned to students. 17 (b) The policy shall recognize that homework is a 18 necessary component in the sequence of a child's education 19 and should be assigned to: 20 (1) Provide reinforcement, practice, application, 21 and enrichment of what is learned in class; -2- LRB9004313THpkam01 1 (2) Prepare students for class participation; 2 (3) Develop independent and responsible work and 3 study habits; 4 (4) Extend learning activities beyond the school 5 hours; 6 (5) Provide an opportunity for student creativity; 7 (6) Foster a closer relationship between home and 8 school; 9 (7) Provide opportunities for the student to gain 10 experience in the utilization of community resources; and 11 (8) Provide for positive on-going parental 12 involvement in the student's education. 13 (105 ILCS 5/34-18.17 new) 14 Sec. 34-18.17. Homework policy. 15 (a) The board of education shall establish and enforce a 16 homework policy for the 1997-98 school year and each school 17 year thereafter that is consistent with the requirements of 18 this Section.
