90_HB0082 105 ILCS 5/27-20.6 new Amends the School Code. Requires all public schools to include in their curricula a unit of instruction on the period in world history known as the Irish Famine. Authorizes the State Superintendent of Education to develop and make guideline instructional materials available to school districts. Provides that each school board itself determines the minimum amount of instruction time that qualifies as a unit of instruction. Effective July 1, 1997. LRB9000873THcw LRB9000873THcw 1 AN ACT to amend the School Code by adding Section 2 27-20.6. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section 6 27-20.6 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/27-20.6 new) 8 Sec. 27-20.6 "Irish Famine" Study. Every public 9 elementary school and high school shall include in its 10 curriculum a unit of instruction studying the causes and 11 effects of mass starvation in mid-19th century Ireland. This 12 period in world history is known as the "Irish Famine", in 13 which millions of Irish died or emigrated. The study of this 14 material is a reaffirmation of the commitment of free people 15 of all nations to eradicate the causes of famine that exist 16 in the modern world. 17 The State Superintendent of Education may prepare and 18 make available to all school boards instructional materials 19 that may be used as guidelines for development of a unit of 20 instruction under this Section; provided, however, that each 21 school board shall itself determine the minimum amount of 22 instruction time that shall qualify as a unit of instruction 23 satisfying the requirements of this Section. 24 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 25 1, 1997.
