SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Illinois Senate was saddened to learn of the
3 death of Bernard J. Lachner, who passed away on November 4,
4 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Lachner made many contributions in the field
6 of health care both in the State of Illinois and nationwide;
7 and
 
8     WHEREAS, An active student and football player, Mr. Lachner
9 graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1945
10 and enrolled at the University of Notre Dame; after a year, he
11 was drafted by the Army and served in Tokyo just after World
12 War II ended; and
 
13     WHEREAS, After his discharge, Mr. Lachner attended
14 Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he received his
15 bachelor of science degree, followed by a masters degree in
16 business administration from the University of Chicago; and
 
17     WHEREAS, In 1954 Mr. Lachner moved to the Ohio State
18 University Hospitals where he rose to the position of assistant
19 dean of the College of Medicine and further served the
20 University as a whole as the vice president for Administrative
21 Operations; he was instrumental in the creation of the division
22 of hospital and health Services administration, serving as its
23 first director; and
 
24     WHEREAS, In the summer of 1972, Mr. Lachner accepted the
25 position of president and chief executive officer of the
26 Evanston Hospital Corp., which had never made an operational
27 profit in its 100 years; he turned it from a money-losing
28 operation into a nationally known center of excellence; and
 
29     WHEREAS, Mr. Lachner also served as the chairman of the

1 American Hospital Association and was inducted into the Modern
2 Healthcare Health Care Hall of Fame in 1998; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Mr. Lachner is survived by his wife Bonnie; three
4 sons, Bernard (Michelle), Thomas (Beth) and James (Dorsey); and
5 five grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
7 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
8 Bernard J. Lachner and we extend our sincere condolences to his
9 family and friends; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Bernard J. Lachner as an expression
12 of our respect for the life of a man who was dedicated to
13 making a difference in the world.
