SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-806.7

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Deletes language providing for reduced registration fees for active duty military personnel. Provides instead that the standard vehicle registration fee for passenger motor vehicles of the first division and motor vehicles of the second division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds shall be waived for any Illinois vehicle owner who is a veteran or is currently enlisted as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5changing Section 3-806.7 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-806.7)
7    Sec. 3-806.7. Registration fees waived for veterans and
8current for active duty military personnel.
9    (a) The Beginning with the 2011 registration year, the
10standard registration fee set forth in Section 3-806 of this
11Code for passenger motor vehicles of the first division and
12motor vehicles of the second division weighing not more than
138,000 pounds and registered under Section 3-815 of this Code,
14shall be waived reduced by 50% for any Illinois vehicle owner
15who is a veteran or is currently enlisted was on active duty as
16a member of the Armed Forces of the United States. As used in
17this Section, "veteran" means a person who has served in the
18armed forces and was discharged or separated under honorable
19conditions. and stationed outside of the United States for a
20period of 90 days or longer during the preceding registration
21year.
22    (b) (Blank). Illinois residents who are members of the
23Armed Forces of the United States and who have been stationed

1outside of the United States for a period of 6 months or
2longer, and who placed their registered motor vehicle in
3storage during the time they served abroad, shall be entitled
4to credit for the unused portion of that registration when
5they renew the registration of that vehicle upon their return
6to the United States. For each month or part thereof that the
7vehicle was in storage and had current registration, the
8member of the armed forces shall receive one month of
9registration without charge.
10    (c) (Blank). Beginning with the 2017 registration year,
11the standard registration fee set forth in Section 3-806 of
12this Code for passenger motor vehicles of the first division
13and motor vehicles of the second division weighing not more
14than 8,000 pounds and registered under Section 3-815 of this
15Code, shall be waived for the year following the return of any
16Illinois vehicle owner who is a member of the active-duty or
17reserve component of the United States Armed Forces who can
18provide proof of serving in a combat mission. Nothing in this
19subsection is applicable to the additional fees incurred by
20specialty, personalized, or vanity license plates.

22    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
23becoming law.
