SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

New Act

Creates the Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Screening Act. Defines "sport" and "student athlete". Provides that a student athlete over the age of 12 must undergo sudden cardiac death screening before the student athlete may participate in sports. Provides that a student athlete must undergo sudden cardiac death screening once in middle school or high school and then once before postsecondary-education-level sports.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning education.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Screening Act.

Section 5. Definitions. As used in this Act:

"Sport" means any activity organized by the school where student athletes compete against one another or against other schools for enjoyment and entertainment.

"Student athlete" means a student who is in any type of school, including, but not limited to, middle school, high school, or postsecondary education, that participates in a sport.

Section 10. Screening for sudden cardiac death.

(a) A student athlete over the age of 12 must undergo sudden cardiac death screening before the student athlete may participate in sports.

(b) A student athlete must undergo sudden cardiac death screening once in middle school or high school and once before postsecondary-education-level sports.
