HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities
3Act was signed into law; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Nearly one in five people have a disability in the
5United States; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Disabilities can be considerably varied; they can
7be physical, cognitive, intellectual, mental, sensory, or
8developmental; they can be present at birth or occur during a
9person's lifetime; they can also be permanent or temporary; and
 
10    WHEREAS, An intellectual disability may mean difficulty
11communicating, learning, and retaining information; they
12include Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Prader-Willi
13syndrome, and developmental delays; and
 
14    WHEREAS, A physical disability may affect, either
15temporarily or permanently, a person's physical capacity and
16mobility; they include multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy,
17spina bifida, brain or spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and
18muscular dystrophy; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sensory disabilities affect one or more senses;
20sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, or spatial awareness; they

1include autism, blindness, and hearing loss; and
 
2    WHEREAS, A mental illness affects a person's thinking,
3emotional state and behaviors; they include bipolar disorder,
4depression, schizophrenia, and eating disorders; therefore, be
5it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8declare October of 2017 as Disability Awareness Month in the
9State of Illinois in order to bring attention to the conditions
10from which so many Americans suffer, and we recognize the work
11being done by disability advocates; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Illinois Disability Association.
