| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, 1 in 150 children in the United States are born | 3 | | with congenital cytomegalovirus; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus is the most common | 5 | | cause of birth defects and childhood disabilities in the United | 6 | | States; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus is preventable with | 8 | | behavioral interventions, such as practicing frequent hand | 9 | | washing with soap and water after contact with diapers or oral | 10 | | secretions, not kissing young children on the mouth, and not | 11 | | sharing food, towels, or utensils with young children; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Cytomegalovirus is found in bodily fluids, such as | 13 | | saliva, blood, urine, and tears; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus can be diagnosed if | 15 | | the virus is found in saliva, blood, or other body tissues of | 16 | | an infant during the first week after birth; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Most people are not aware of their cytomegalovirus | 18 | | infection status, with pregnant women being one of the highest | 19 | | risk groups; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The American College of Obstetricians and | 2 | | Gynecologists and the Centers for Disease Control and | 3 | | Prevention recommend that OB/GYNs counsel women on basic | 4 | | prevention measures to guard against cytomegalovirus | 5 | | infection; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, The incidence of children born with congenital | 7 | | cytomegalovirus can be greatly reduced with public education | 8 | | and awareness; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, A comprehensive understanding of cytomegalovirus | 10 | | provides opportunities to improve the health and well-being of | 11 | | our children; therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 13 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 14 | | we designate the month of June 2014 as Illinois Cytomegalovirus | 15 | | Awareness Month in the State of Illinois in order to raise | 16 | | awareness of the dangers of cytomegalovirus and reduce the | 17 | | occurrence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection; and be it | 18 | | further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That we recommend that more effort be taken to | 20 | | counsel women of childbearing age of the effect this virus can | 21 | | have on their children.
