| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Homer Glen resident and | 4 | | Chicago Bears' legend Steve McMichael on his long-anticipated | 5 | | entrance into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael played 15 seasons as a defensive | 7 | | tackle in the National Football League (NFL), with 13 of those | 8 | | seasons as a Chicago Bear appearing in a franchise-record 191 | 9 | | straight games; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael, a native Texan, began playing | 11 | | football for the University of Texas Longhorns, where he | 12 | | earned MVP in the 1979 Hula Bowl; he was inducted into the | 13 | | Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1999 and the College Football Hall of | 14 | | Fame in 2010; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, At six feet and two inches tall and 270 pounds, | 16 | | Steve McMichael, a charismatic soul, was drafted into the NFL | 17 | | by the New England Patriots in 1980; he only played on that | 18 | | team for a year before becoming a beloved member of the Chicago | 19 | | Bears; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael played for the Bears from 1981 to | 21 | | 1993 and was affectionately known as "Mongo" and "Ming the |

| 1 | | Merciless" or "Ming" for short; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael's impressive record includes | 3 | | ranking second in Chicago Bears History with 92.5 sacks; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, During Steve McMichael's tenure with the Bears, | 5 | | he helped his team win six division champions; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael's performance was instrumental in | 7 | | the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl XX victory and is considered among | 8 | | the greatest defensive performances in NFL history; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael was a two-time first-team | 10 | | All-Pro, a three-time second-team All-Pro, and a two-time Pro | 11 | | Bowler; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael was named the 19th best player in | 13 | | Bears history by writers Don Pierson and Dan Pompei in the | 14 | | Chicago Bears Centennial Scrapbook in 2019; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael was described by the Chicago | 16 | | Bears' Mike Ditka as the toughest player he ever coached; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, During Steve McMichael's era, he helped the Bears | 18 | | set numerous defensive team records, including fewest yards | 19 | | allowed with 3,863 and most sacks with 72, including 10 made by |

| 1 | | McMichael; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Bears' 72 total sacks still stands as an NFL | 3 | | record, and Steve McMichael's 95.0 career sacks rank fourth in | 4 | | NFL history by a defensive tackle; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Steve McMichael was elected to the Pro Football | 6 | | Hall of Fame, garnering the required 80% of the vote from a | 7 | | 50-member Selection Committee; therefore, be it | 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 9 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 10 | | we congratulate Steve "Mongo" McMichael on his much-deserved | 11 | | 2024 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; and be it | 12 | | further | 13 | | RESOLVED, That we thank Steve McMichael for his commitment | 14 | | and devotion to the Chicago Bears and his legendary | 15 | | contribution to the history of the Bears and professional | 16 | | football; and be it further | 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to Steve McMichael and his family as a token of our | 19 | | esteem and respect. |
