| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | 3 | | congratulate the Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club (SCCC) | 4 | | on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, On May 21, 1924, SCCC was founded as the | 6 | | Springfield Ceramic Society by Springfield resident and | 7 | | initial president Mrs. Lewis Minor, who regularly hosted | 8 | | fashionable teas in her home for women interested in ceramic | 9 | | arts, especially hand-painting china; in 1928, the | 10 | | organization's name was changed to its current designation to | 11 | | reflect that its members' creative pursuits had grown into | 12 | | involving all arts and crafts; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, During its early years, SCCC members would place | 14 | | their created craft items on display and meet with talented | 15 | | and influential citizens from the Greater Springfield Area, | 16 | | including fellow member Elizabeth Conner Lindsay, the wife of | 17 | | poet Vachel Lindsay; the club's first exhibit was held at the | 18 | | Lincoln Library for public viewing, and this practice of | 19 | | exhibiting items created by members still exists today at the | 20 | | annual Spring Table Setting Luncheon and Fall Holiday Market; | 21 | | and | 22 | | WHEREAS, SCCC initiated its first table setting display in |

| 1 | | 1930, and the club later won first place at the 7th Annual | 2 | | Table Setting Tournament hosted by the Stix, Baer & Fuller | 3 | | store in St. Louis, Missouri in 1938, with the distinction of | 4 | | being the only club outside of the City of St. Louis invited to | 5 | | participate; the organization continues this tradition each | 6 | | spring at its annual Table Setting Luncheon, where new members | 7 | | display their table designs; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, SCCC's current objective is the pursuit of | 9 | | teaching ceramics and crafts in their various phases and, | 10 | | through offering such instruction, to become involved in | 11 | | charitable projects and programs that benefit the community in | 12 | | order to enhance educational and community services while | 13 | | simultaneously supporting a better understanding of art in the | 14 | | Greater Springfield Area; the organization's fundraising | 15 | | efforts have allowed continued funding of its community | 16 | | activities during its 100-year history; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, SCCC members have reached hundreds of community | 18 | | members by donating their skills and talents to teach classes | 19 | | and provide funds to purchase art supplies; the club currently | 20 | | partners with Springfield area schools, the Sojourn Women's | 21 | | Center, the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery, MERCY Communities, | 22 | | and Springfield Memorial and HSHS St. John's Hospitals; the | 23 | | organization has also donated thousands of dollars through its | 24 | | Youth Art Outreach Grant to aid art teachers working at |

| 1 | | Springfield area schools; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, SCCC membership, which consists of individuals | 3 | | who primarily reside in Springfield and the Greater | 4 | | Springfield Area, has grown from its humble beginnings of 12 | 5 | | members in 1924 to 206 members today; therefore, be it | 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 7 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the | 8 | | Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club (SCCC) on its 100th | 9 | | anniversary, and we recognize its members for their dedication | 10 | | to the arts and the community; and be it further | 11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 12 | | presented to SCCC as an expression of our esteem and respect. |
