| SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The General Assembly takes pride in recognizing | 3 |
| the accomplishments and contributions of Illinois officials | 4 |
| and citizens; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The General Assembly, as an august body, exercises | 6 |
| discerning judgment in resolutions to cite the noted | 7 |
| achievements of a select few individuals, especially when | 8 |
| bestowing one of the highest methods of recognition by the | 9 |
| State; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, In recognition of the lasting contributions that | 11 |
| Patricia Thompson Madden made on the issue of mental health at | 12 |
| the John J. Madden Mental Health Center, and across the State | 13 |
| of Illinois, the General Assembly would like to recognize Ms. | 14 |
| Madden, who served as the Center's Administrator for ten years, | 15 |
| by naming the Center's Administrative Pavilion after her; and
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was a woman who dedicated | 17 |
| her life to persons with mental illness; she died on August 31, | 18 |
| 2003; she is survived by her son, Robert Baren, and | 19 |
| daughter-in-law Alice; her father, Robert Thompson; her | 20 |
| sister, Elizabeth, and brother-in-law Stanley Hewins; her | 21 |
| brother, Lawrence Robert Thompson, and sister-in-law Rhonda; | 22 |
| her aunt, Nancy Tobara; her nephews, Jason and his wife Olivia | 23 |
| Herrick, Christopher, Shawn and his wife Daniele, Eric, and | 24 |
| Shaden Thompson; and her nieces Carrie and Shaelynn Thompson; | 25 |
| and
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was born in Peoria and | 27 |
| moved frequently as a child, living in Chicago; Muncie, | 28 |
| Indiana; Kansas City, Missouri; and Villa Park; she was a | 29 |
| member of the first graduating class of Willowbrook High School | 30 |
| in Villa Park; after graduating from the University of Illinois | 31 |
| with a bachelor's degree in nursing, she received her master's |

| degree in community mental health nursing from Arizona State | 2 |
| University; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden went to work after | 4 |
| college at the U.S. Army Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, where | 5 |
| as a firsthand witness of the civil rights movement, she became | 6 |
| an advocate of equal rights for all; and
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden went on to work with | 8 |
| psychiatric patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital | 9 |
| in Waco, Texas, where she witnessed the toll the Vietnam War | 10 |
| took on returning veterans, and in the late 1960s, she served | 11 |
| as a psychiatric nurse at Denver General Hospital; she also | 12 |
| spent several years teaching at California State University in | 13 |
| Sacramento; and
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden returned to the Chicago | 15 |
| area in 1986 and began working for the State of Illinois, first | 16 |
| as the Associate Director for Administration of the Illinois | 17 |
| State Psychiatric Institute and then as the Hospital | 18 |
| Administrator of the John J. Madden Mental Health Center for | 19 |
| ten years; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was very involved in the | 21 |
| Oak Park community, where she was a sixteen year resident, | 22 |
| serving as chairperson of the Barrie Park Citizens Advisory | 23 |
| Committee from its inception in 1999 and as a member of the | 24 |
| First United Church of Oak Park, where she served as | 25 |
| chairperson of the Christian Education Committee, as a member | 26 |
| of the Church Council, and as an ordained Elder in the | 27 |
| Presbyterian Church; therefore be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 29 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES | 30 |
| CONCURRING HEREIN, that the Administrative Pavilion at the John | 31 |
| J. Madden Mental Health Center in Maywood is named the Patricia |

| RESOLVED, That suitable copies of resolution be presented | 4 |

family of Patricia Thompson Madden; and be it further

| RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to | 6 |
| the Director of Central Management Services, the Secretary of | 7 |
| Human Services, and other operating authorities for the cited | 8 |
| building.
