1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of
3 the State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Carolyn
4 Anthony on being named Librarian of the Year in Illinois for
5 2003; and
6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Anthony has been the director of the
7 Skokie Public Library since 1985; she has helped to maintain
8 the standard of excellence in the library, which was founded
9 in 1929 and has been tax-supported since 1941; and
10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Anthony attended Colby College as an
11 English major; her first library job was at Harvard's Widener
12 Library; she went on to work at the Enoch Pratt Library in
13 Baltimore, Maryland and then at the Baltimore County Public
14 Library as the head of information services; and
15 WHEREAS, During her tenure as director of the Skokie
16 Public Library, Mrs. Anthony has worked to implement new
17 programs and to improve the facility; the biggest change has
18 been an addition of 34,000 square feet to give the library a
19 total of 134,000 square feet; the library houses extensive
20 reference and technology resources; it attracts many people
21 because they can check out books under a reciprocal borrowing
22 system; there are 95 feet of meeting rooms; the library hosts
23 The Great Book Discussion, which is in its 40th year and
24 meets once a month; the first Sunday of every month, there is
25 a classical music performance; and
26 WHEREAS, In addition to literature in Chinese, Korean,
27 and Polish, the library has 7,500 Russian books; there is a
28 Russian club, a book discussion group for teens, a teen
29 advisory group, and a large foreign film section as well as
30 Friday movies and daily movies on a new plasma screen; books
31 are available in braille, and there are resources for the
32 hearing impaired; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we congratulate Carolyn Anthony on being named the Librarian
4 of the Year in Illinois for 2003; and be it further
5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to Mrs. Anthony as an expression of our respect and
7 esteem.
