| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Dr. John William Hoban of | 4 |
| Aurora on November 15, 2003; and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, John William Hoban was born on March 13, 1920, in | 6 |
| Detroit, Michigan to the late John William Hoban Sr. and Stella | 7 |
| (Watson) Hoban; he graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High | 8 |
| School in 1937 and helped support his family while attending | 9 |
| night school at the University of Detroit; and | 10 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Hoban valiantly served his country in the U.S. | 11 |
| Navy, beginning in 1942; he flew 20 mission in the central | 12 |
| Pacific during World War II; his wartime honors included the | 13 |
| Distinguished Flying Cross; he remained on active duty until | 14 |
| 1955, after which he spent another 13 years in the U.S. Navy, | 15 |
| finishing in 1968 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander; and | 16 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Hoban married Arline Dorr in 1948; he worked | 17 |
| as an administrator for the University of Detroit and Lawrence | 18 |
| Institute of Technology; he joined the staff of Waubonsee | 19 |
| Community College in Aurora in 1968 as assistant Dean of Adult | 20 |
| Education; he received his Doctorate in Education in 1972; and | 21 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Hoban continued to share his teaching gifts; | 22 |
| he taught adult education classes in philosophy, Great | 23 |
| Decisions, and economics for Holy Angels Parish and was a | 24 |
| member of the board of the Aurora Catholic Education | 25 |
| Foundation; despite the fact that he already held an Ed. D., he | 26 |
| spent a summer student teaching at the high school level in | 27 |
| order to earn his teacher's certificate; in 1978, he left the | 28 |
| administrative offices at Waubonsee and began teaching | 29 |
| economics and business, which he enjoyed immensely until his | 30 |
| retirement in 1989; and |

| WHEREAS, Dr. Hoban remained active in community service | 2 |
| during his retirement, volunteering for the Service Corps of | 3 |
| Retired Executives (SCORE), Aurora's PADS program, and the Holy | 4 |
| Angels Food Pantry; he and his wife traveled extensively, and | 5 |
| he enjoyed the company and accomplishments of his children and | 6 |
| grandchildren; he was an enthusiastic golfer, card player, and | 7 |
| fisherman; he was a member of Holy Angels Church; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. John William Hoban has been | 9 |
| deeply felt by many, especially his wife of 55 years, Arline; | 10 |
| his children, John William III (Tina Luster), Michael (Nancy) | 11 |
| Christopher (Jane), David (Laura), Sarah (Mitch Walker), and | 12 |
| Suzanne (John Sullivan); his 11 grandchildren; his sisters, Sr. | 13 |
| Rita Hoban IHM, Rose Dykas, Rita Hoban, and Josephine Hoban; | 14 |
| and his numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 16 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 17 |
| Dr. John William Hoban, and we extend our sincere condolences | 18 |
| to his friends, family, and all who knew and loved him; and be | 19 |
| it further
| 20 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 21 |
| presented to the family of Dr. John William Hoban as an | 22 |
| expression of our deepest sympathy.
