| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Paul John Magelli of Urbana, who passed | 4 | | away on December 4, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Paul Magelli was born in Mount Clare on June 28, | 6 | | 1931; he was an entrepreneur from early on; at the age of | 7 | | eight, he co-owned 25 goats
and sold goat milk; by the age of | 8 | | 12, he was co-owner of the Magelli Brothers supermarkets; he | 9 | | graduated from Ottawa Township High School in 1949 and worked | 10 | | with his brothers at their supermarkets until 1956, when he | 11 | | entered the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign; he | 12 | | received his bachelor's degree in economics in 1959, his | 13 | | master's degree in 1960, and his Ph.D. in 1965, all from the
| 14 | | University of Illinois; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Paul Magelli began his career by serving as Dean | 16 | | of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at | 17 | | Wichita State University, where he was also the
President of | 18 | | the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences from 1982 to 1983; | 19 | | he served as Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Drake | 20 | | University, as President of the Metropolitan State College of | 21 | | Denver,
and as President of Parkland College from 1987 to 1989; | 22 | | upon retiring from Parkland College, he returned to the | 23 | | University of Illinois, where he served as an Assistant Dean of |

| 1 | | the MBA program, as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and | 2 | | Sciences,
as Associate Dean and Director of Budgets, and as a | 3 | | visiting professor of economics; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, In 1995, Paul Magelli established Illinois
| 5 | | Business Consulting within the College of Business, which | 6 | | enabled MBA students to focus
their classroom skills on | 7 | | real-world problems affecting companies; since the start
of the | 8 | | program, hundreds of successful student-client relationships | 9 | | have solved pressing business needs
and developed outstanding | 10 | | business leaders; the program has become a
model for similar | 11 | | programs across the country; in 2004, he helped establish the | 12 | | Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership, based in the College
of | 13 | | Business, which helps infuse entrepreneurship and | 14 | | entrepreneurial thinking across every
academic discipline of | 15 | | the University of Illinois; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Paul Magelli has received numerous awards and | 17 | | recognitions; he was a member of the first class of American | 18 | | Council of Education Fellows in 1965; he received a Ford | 19 | | Foundation Fellowship in 1965 and
the University of Illinois | 20 | | Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award in 1999; he was chosen | 21 | | by the United States Olympic Committee to carry the Olympic | 22 | | torch on its way to Salt Lake City in 2002 after being | 23 | | nominated by colleagues and students because he "lit the fire" | 24 | | in the hearts and minds

| 1 | | Honorary Doctor of Law, honoris causa, in 2003 from the | 2 | | University of Bristol, United Kingdom, where he
helped | 3 | | establish the Bristol Enterprise Centre; he was recognized as | 4 | | the University Student Senate Faculty Member of the Year in | 5 | | 2016; he received the Entrepreneurial Excellence Advocacy | 6 | | Award in 2016 at the Champaign County Innovation
Celebration; | 7 | | and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, In 2011, Paul Magelli was part of a team that | 9 | | attempted an ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro, but was ultimately | 10 | | unsuccessful; he had been training for a return climb and the | 11 | | chance to be the oldest person on record to attempt the climb; | 12 | | therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 15 | | Paul John Magelli, and extend our sincere condolences to his | 16 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 17 | | further
