| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of John R. Dahl of Savoy, who passed away on | 4 | | January 15, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, John Dahl was born in Tacoma, Washington to | 6 | | Margaret and John Dahl on November 6, 1923; he served in the | 7 | | United States Army Air Force with the 8th Army Air Force in | 8 | | England during World War II; upon returning to the U.S., he was | 9 | | hospitalized at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs, Colorado, | 10 | | where he met and married his nurse, Lieutenant Violet R. | 11 | | Holdiman; he graduated from the University of Washington in | 12 | | Seattle, where he rowed on the crew as an undergraduate; he | 13 | | earned his Master of Arts in History after the war; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, John Dahl began his teaching career at the | 15 | | University of Northern Iowa; he then taught in the public | 16 | | schools of Minneapolis and Edina, Minnesota, before coming to | 17 | | the University of Illinois in 1967; in 1963, he was selected as | 18 | | a John Hay Fellow in the Humanities at Yale University, where | 19 | | he was also an Honorary Fellow of Calhoun College; he was also | 20 | | an adjunct professor in the M.A.T. Program; prior to his | 21 | | retirement from the University of Illinois in 1989, he was a | 22 | | member of the National Humanities Faculty; he was also a member | 23 | | of the Board of the Athletic Association, an Associate Chairman |

| 1 | | of the Department of History, and Chairman of the Faculty | 2 | | Advisory Committee for the Newman Foundation; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, John Dahl was a professed member of the Secular | 4 | | Franciscan Order for over 50 years; he served as an officer of | 5 | | the Sierra Club of Champaign-Urbana, including 2 terms as | 6 | | President and as District Governor for clubs in Illinois and | 7 | | northern Indiana; at St. Matthew's, he was a lector and | 8 | | Eucharistic minister; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, John Dahl was preceded in death by his parents; a | 10 | | younger brother; and his son-in-law, Kenneth Newman; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, John Dahl is survived by his beloved wife, Violet; | 12 | | his 2 daughters, Maureen Newman and Lisa (Brian) McClean; his 2 | 13 | | grandsons, Sean McClean and Christopher Newman; and his 2 | 14 | | great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Jacob Newman; therefore, be | 15 | | it
| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 18 | | John R. Dahl, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | 19 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
