1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of
3 the State of Illinois are pleased to recognize citizens of
4 the State who have made outstanding contributions to their
5 local communities; and
6 WHEREAS, Lou Sherman will celebrate his 30th year as
7 Steger Village President in May of 2003, and he recently
8 celebrated his 75th birthday; and
9 WHEREAS, Mayor Sherman was born in 1927 and grew up in a
10 series of orphanages in New York state; he served in the
11 United States Army during World War II, serving in Germany
12 with the army of occupation; he obtained the rank of
13 Sergeant; and
14 WHEREAS, Mayor Sherman first came to Illinois in 1947 to
15 work with the students at Glenwood School for Boys, a
16 boarding school for children from dysfunctional or broken
17 homes; he remained there for 10 years, working in the dean's
18 office, supervising the students' work program, and serving
19 as a substitute house parent; and
20 WHEREAS, Mayor Sherman moved to Steger with his family in
21 1959; in 1973, he ran for Steger Village President and won
22 the first of his eight consecutive terms; in 1979, he served
23 as president of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers
24 Association; in 1993, Mayor Sherman was selected to be one of
25 the 40 vice presidents of the 3,000 member Illinois Municipal
26 League, an office he still holds; and
27 WHEREAS, Mayor Sherman is married to his wife, Andrea; he
28 has two grown sons, Brian and Eric, four stepsons, and eight
29 grandchildren; and
30 WHEREAS, Under Mayor Sherman's leadership, the Village of
31 Steger has grown and thrived with the annexation of the

1 Miller Woods area, the creation of five new subdivisions, and
2 new business development; the town's roads have been
3 improved, its parks equipped and expanded, and it received
4 economic vitality through the creation of the Louis Sherman
5 Industrial Park; the Mayor was instrumental in the
6 development of Centennial Village, a senior housing complex
7 containing 81 units and a community and senior center which
8 serves the entire population of Steger; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we congratulate Mayor Lou Sherman on his 30 successful years
12 as President of the Village of Steger, and we commend him for
13 his work for that community; and be it further
14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to Mayor Lou Sherman as a token of our respect and
16 esteem.
