| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The Relay for Life of Vermilion County, scheduled | 3 |
| for May 14 and 15, 2005, is a community celebration and is the | 4 |
| American Cancer Society's national signature activity, | 5 |
| bringing communities together in a unique overnight event; | 6 |
| teams of 12 people come together to honor cancer survivors and | 7 |
| in memory of those who have died from the disease; members of | 8 |
| each team walk or run around a track throughout the night in | 9 |
| the hope that cancer will one day be eliminated; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, | 11 |
| community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to | 12 |
| eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing | 13 |
| cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer | 14 |
| through research education, advocacy, and service; and | 15 |
| WHEREAS, In 2002, over 57,000 residents of Illinois were | 16 |
| diagnosed with cancer; over all, the five-year survival rate | 17 |
| for cancer patients is over 60 percent; the American Cancer | 18 |
| Society wants to increase this survival rate and has set | 19 |
| attainable goals to be accomplished by the year 2015; and

| WHEREAS, Money raised in the Relay for Life helps the | 21 |
| American Cancer Society to provide research, education, | 22 |
| advocacy, and service through programs such as Reach to | 23 |
| Recovery, Man to Man, Look Good Feel Better, and the Cancer | 24 |
| Survivors Network; research on national and statewide levels | 25 |
| translates into more people surviving cancer in every city, | 26 |
| town, and village in Illinois; because of this and other | 27 |
| research, there are more than 9,000,000 Americans alive today | 28 |
| who are cancer survivors; and

| WHEREAS, The Vermilion County Relay for Life will feature a | 30 |
| Luminaria Ceremony after dark, where friends gather around the | 31 |
| candlelit track to remember, honor, and celebrate the lives of |

| those who have battled cancer; it will also feature the Cancer | 2 |
| Survivor's Victory Lap; the first lap of the Relay for Life is | 3 |
| reserved for cancer survivors and caregivers in order to focus | 4 |
| on triumph and healing as the event begins; therefore, be it
| 5 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 6 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 7 |
| we honor the organizers and participants in the Vermilion | 8 |
| County Relay for Life, and wish them well during this year's | 9 |
| relay on May 14 and 15, 2005; and be it further
| 10 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 11 |
| presented to the Vermilion County Relay for Life organizers as | 12 |
| an expression of our deepest respect and esteem and with best | 13 |
| wishes for a successful event.
