| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Charles Richard "Charlie" Hoogland of | 4 | | Springfield, who passed away on June 25, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was born to Clarence and Euna | 6 | | Alexander Hoogland in 1930; he attended Springfield High | 7 | | School; he graduated from Yale University in 1952, where he | 8 | | completed the Naval ROTC program and was a member of the Yale | 9 | | Record and the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity; he served in the U.S. | 10 | | Navy as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War; he married | 11 | | Kathleen Knox McLain in Springfield on July 4, 1953, and they | 12 | | had five children together; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland started his career at Midstates | 14 | | Appliance & Supply Co., a company that his father started in | 15 | | 1946, which was the first wholesale distributor to bring | 16 | | SuperBalls, mood rings, hula hoops, PopAir popcorn machines, | 17 | | and Sony electronics to the Midwest; he then transitioned the | 18 | | company, becoming the founder and CEO of Family Video; he began | 19 | | to expand the company by finding locations on his drive from | 20 | | Springfield to his summer home in Wequetonsing, Michigan; he | 21 | | built Family Video to include 800 stores with over 10,000 | 22 | | employees, becoming the third-largest video store chain in the | 23 | | country; he was extremely proud of building a family business; |

| 1 | | his son Keith is now the CEO of the company, and his grandson | 2 | | McLain is the first of the fourth generation to work at the | 3 | | company; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland created the Hoogland Family | 5 | | Foundation, one of his greatest accomplishments; through his | 6 | | foundation, he gave substantial gifts to several organizations | 7 | | and causes, including the Hoogland Center of the Arts, the | 8 | | University of Chicago Hoogland Biobank, immunotherapy research | 9 | | at the University of Chicago, lymphoma research at Stanford | 10 | | University, the Vanderbilt University, Hillsdale College, the | 11 | | University of Illinois-Springfield, the Springfield YMCA, and | 12 | | the Little Traverse Conservancy; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland enjoyed golfing, solving | 14 | | puzzles, running the 4th of July 10-mile race, snorkeling, | 15 | | playing bridge, and reading; he spent 60 consecutive 4th of | 16 | | Julys with his family in Harbor Springs, Michigan; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was known as someone who was | 18 | | never afraid to fail and was always the first to the party; he | 19 | | will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit and | 20 | | patriotism; he loved his wife, his family, and his country; he | 21 | | will be deeply missed; and | 22 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was preceded in death by his |

| 1 | | parents; his daughter, Samantha Knox Hoogland; and his | 2 | | grandson, Robert Stults Hoogland; and | 3 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland is survived by his wife of 67 | 4 | | years, Kathleen; his children, Charles Eric Hoogland (Laurie), | 5 | | Keith Alexander Hoogland (Susan), Kathleen Knox Hoogland, and | 6 | | Eliza Hoogland Reynolds (Tim); 16 grandchildren; and five | 7 | | great-grandsons; therefore, be it
