| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | 3 | | congratulate Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. of the 21st Ward | 4 | | on the occasion of his retirement from the Chicago City | 5 | | Council; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins is the son of former Illinois | 7 | | Senator Howard B. Brookins Sr.; he graduated from Mendel | 8 | | Catholic High School and earned a degree in Mortuary Science | 9 | | from Southern Illinois University Carbondale; he earned his | 10 | | Juris Doctor from Northern Illinois University College of Law; | 11 | | and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Prior to serving on the Chicago City Council, | 13 | | Alderman Brookins served as an Assistant Public Defender, | 14 | | Assistant State's Attorney, and Special Assistant Attorney | 15 | | General; he remains a practicing attorney at the Law Office of | 16 | | Howard B. Brookins Jr., PC; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins was first elected to serve the | 18 | | 21st Ward as an alderman in 2003, representing parts of Auburn | 19 | | Gresham and Washington Heights; he is currently completing his | 20 | | fifth term as one of the longest sitting members of the Chicago | 21 | | City Council, having served for 20 years by the end of this | 22 | | term; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, While in office, Alderman Brookins' | 2 | | accomplishments include the opening of the 21st Ward's first | 3 | | Starbucks, the launch of Chicago's electric scooter program, | 4 | | and the establishment of a reparations fund for victims of | 5 | | notorious former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge; he worked | 6 | | tirelessly to bring a Walmart Supercenter to West Chatham and | 7 | | was instrumental in the development of the Anaerobic Digester, | 8 | | which uses food waste to produce renewable energy and nutrient | 9 | | rich compost; he also served as chairman of the Committee on | 10 | | Economic, Capital and Technology Development, the Committee on | 11 | | Education and Child Development, and the Committee on | 12 | | Transportation and Public Way; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has also shown his dedication | 14 | | and commitment to the 21st Ward through hosting many community | 15 | | events, including job fairs, internship fairs, high school | 16 | | fairs, business advisory council meetings, the Annual Back to | 17 | | School Summer Picnic, the Annual 21st Ward Clean & Green, Bike | 18 | | the Hood, the Annual Senior Thanksgiving Dinners, the Annual | 19 | | Christmas Party, the Summer Music series, the Annual | 20 | | Shred-A-Thons, weekly Constituent Nights, and monthly Town | 21 | | Hall meetings; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has served as a member of | 23 | | several organizations, including Prince Hall Mason Eureka |

| 1 | | Lodge #64, the Community Media Workshop Board of Directors, | 2 | | the Northern Illinois Alumni Association Board of Directors, | 3 | | and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has expressed plans to remain | 5 | | politically active and to serve as a guide and counsel to young | 6 | | people in the 21st Ward Young Democrats organization; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins is the husband of Ebonie | 8 | | Taylor-Brookins and the father of Howard B. Brookins III and | 9 | | Harihson B. Brookins; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate | 12 | | Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. on his retirement from the | 13 | | Chicago City Council, thank him for his years of dedicated | 14 | | service to the people of the 21st Ward and the City of Chicago, | 15 | | and wish him continued success in his future endeavors; and be | 16 | | it further
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to Alderman Brookins as an expression of our esteem | 19 | | and respect.
