| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Louis "Louie" Joseph Smarjesse, who | 4 | | passed away on February 12, 2021; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse was born to Rose and John | 6 | | Smarjesse on October 3, 1932; he attended St. Peter and Paul | 7 | | School; he left Cathedral High School early to join the U.S. | 8 | | Army, where he finished his schooling and served on Okinawa | 9 | | during the Korean War; he scored so well on Army tests that he | 10 | | was placed in Intelligence and Reconnaissance; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse had many jobs, including managing | 12 | | the Kinney shoe store on the square in Springfield and the one | 13 | | in Lafayette, Indiana; he moved furniture for a local store, | 14 | | worked at a meat plant, and tended bar, all at the same time; | 15 | | he also sold cars for Friendly Chevrolet, worked as a common | 16 | | laborer, sold life insurance, and collected for All Star | 17 | | Music; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse's true passion was in hospitality | 19 | | and, specifically, bartending; he owned the memorable Supper | 20 | | Club, the Sand Bar, and Griff's Tavern and co-owned the Blue | 21 | | Moon with his brother Bob; he also managed The Sportsman, | 22 | | where he fed the piranhas; he bartended in 23 restaurants and |

| 1 | | bars, including Milano's, the Abe Lincoln Hotel, Mansion View, | 2 | | the Governor's Mansion for Governor Walker, Robin Hood, | 3 | | Par-a-dice, Village Pump in Indianapolis, Flaming Pit, Don | 4 | | Henry's, Harness House, Ideal Lounge, Rosalie's Place, D & | 5 | | J's, Dicenso's Black Angus, Ember's, George Rank's, Ben's | 6 | | Place, Top of the Arch, Lake Club, Governor Hotel, Oak Crest | 7 | | Country Club, John's Lounge, and the Brass Rail; he is best | 8 | | known for the many years he worked at Gabatoni's; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse had wonderful stories and loved | 10 | | to make others happy; he and his wife traveled to Ireland, | 11 | | Costa Rica, and most states, and twice enjoyed two-week | 12 | | sailing cruises in the Caribbean and weeks on the island of St. | 13 | | John; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse was preceded in death by his son, | 15 | | Paul Smarjesse, and his grandson, Ronald Mohan Jr.; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse is survived by his wife of 50 | 17 | | years, Susan Hummel Smarjesse; his two former wives; his | 18 | | children, Mike (Rhonda) Smarjesse, Karen (Charlie) Hitt, | 19 | | Patricia (Ramon) Perez, Janet (John Henrikson) Rawlings, Kelly | 20 | | (Trevor) Smarjesse-Miller, Anna (Bob Shaver) Neumann, and | 21 | | Charly (Nancy Barnick) Smarjesse; his grandchildren, Nick, | 22 | | Jake, Mike, Matt, Noah, Ben, and Johnny Smarjesse, Reid Hitt, | 23 | | Andy Rawlings, Rachel Hammann, Lindsay Sullivan, Chon Nguyen, |
