| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Sally Stovall, who passed away on May 21, | 4 | | 2019 at the age of 70; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was born in Eunice, Louisiana to | 6 | | Reverend James L. and Alice Stovall on April 16, 1949; she grew | 7 | | up in South Louisiana; she graduated from Southern Methodist | 8 | | University and received her master's degree at Loyola | 9 | | University, Chicago; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall lived in Taiwan, Malaysia, | 11 | | Argentina, and across the United States, impacting lives before | 12 | | settling down in Oak Park in 2002; she worked for Illinois | 13 | | Action for Children; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall relished visiting her | 15 | | grandchildren; after retiring from a career in organizational | 16 | | development, she embarked on a new career as a climate activist | 17 | | and community organizer with a passion for making the world a | 18 | | better place for future generations; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall, alongside her loving partner Dick | 20 | | Alton, held a community meeting about global warming and formed | 21 | | Green Community Connections in September 2010; she took the |

| 1 | | helm and enlisted volunteers to create a website, launched | 2 | | monthly newsletters, and held community meetings about native | 3 | | plants, edible gardens, food waste, organic lawn care, and | 4 | | more; her efforts helped spur a steady and sustained green | 5 | | revolution in Oak Park and River Forest; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall spearheaded Green Community | 7 | | Connections' largest program, the One Earth Film Festival, in | 8 | | 2012; she was instrumental in the success of the film festival | 9 | | over the years, leading the charge to spread the festival to | 10 | | Lake County and expanding its reach from the original | 11 | | boundaries of Oak Park and River Forest; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall leveraged Green Block Parties to | 13 | | disseminate news about planting milkweed, an essential food for | 14 | | monarch caterpillar survival, in support of a project near and | 15 | | dear to her heart called "Mobilizing for Monarchs"; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, In 2015, Sally Stovall and Dick challenged | 17 | | themselves to give up their car for 90 days in order to lower | 18 | | CO2 emissions; in 2018, they gave up their car entirely; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was a real-life role model for | 20 | | living by your values; she was committed to building resiliency | 21 | | for our planet and its people and connecting others to what | 22 | | really matters; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was preceded in death by her | 2 | | parents, Reverend James L. Stovall and Alice Stovall; and her | 3 | | siblings, Mary Alice Ballard and James "Jim" Stovall; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Sally Stovall is survived by her partner, Richard | 5 | | "Dick" Alton; her sister, Carol (Pete) Broussard; her children, | 6 | | Lee (Britt) Emerick and Teresa (Jeff) Madsen; her | 7 | | grandchildren, Finn and Rory Madsen; and her many nieces and | 8 | | nephews; therefore, be it
| 9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 10 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 11 | | Sally Stovall and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | 12 | | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 | | presented to the family of Sally Stovall as an expression of | 15 | | our deepest sympathy.
